Our Story

What is Relational Recovery?

Relational Recovery is a practice of returning to self awareness and how we connect with others in the present moment. It includes how we interact with the self, others and the environment in which we live.  With wholehearted compassion, we will help you to begin this lifetime practice.

So, who are we and why do we invite you to join us?

Our team has been leading the way for others in relational growth and emotional sobriety for over 20 years. We came together in 2001 as we led individuals, couples and families in healing broken connections. We fostered the rebuilding of trust and intimacy in families who participated in residential treatment programs for those recovering from addictions, trauma and mental health issues. We built successful family programs and workshops together, all the while, sharing in the pain, joy, and strength of our clients.

As a group, we have seen the tremendous healing power of connection. We believe that everyone can grow past their defenses. As humans, we use creative tools and defenses to keep ourselves safe and out of harm’s way. The very skills that once served us, can become limiting and prevent us from experiencing close and meaningful relationships. One of the leading researchers in the field of trauma, Bessel Van Der Kolk, M.D., said, “Being able to feel safe with other people is probably the single most important aspect of mental health; safe connections are fundamental to meaningful and satisfying lives.” In this workshop, you will learn to recognize when those defenses arise, how to regulate uncomfortable emotions, and build new strategies for overcoming old patterns and behaviors that no longer serve you or your loved ones.

The concept for Connections Relational Recovery began while Barbara was living overseas. Barbara had left her long-time recovery community and professional associates, friends and family during that move. This separation illuminated the value of meaningful connections with others. It wasn’t until the pandemic and the world’s shift to a virtual lifestyle that we all began to see the potential for relationship workshops in a virtual format. This format would also enable those in isolated areas or marginalized communities to participate in a spiritual, collaborative, relational growth community.

We bring over 150 years of combined professional experience. This workshop is built on our knowledge of attachment, systems and relationship theories, and the effects of trauma on the mind, body and spirit.  The effects of trauma include impact to our neurobiology and the ability to regulate our emotions. It is important to note that this workshop is not therapy. This workshop is built on sharing education, skill building, and experiential practices. Should you need a referral for therapeutic services, we are happy to help show you the way.

Join us on this journey of BEING, BECOMING and BELONGING.
